Saba's Currency and Credit Cards

Saba's visitors have a number of options when paying for services on the island. Travelers can use major international credit cards, hard currency, and traveler's cheques.

Up until January of 2011, the official currency of Saba was the Netherlands Antilles guilder, sometimes also known as the florin (NAf).  However, when Saba became independent of the Netherlands, the government voted to change the currency to the United States Dollar (USD).  While this certainly makes it easier for American travelers to make purchases, some may wish to avoid carrying large bills with them while they are on vacation.

In April 2005 the island received its first ATM machine, at the Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago in Windwardside. Before this, travelers had to carry cash to the island. Many, but not all, of the island's establishments also accept MasterCard, Visa, and Discover cards. Additionally, traveler's cheques are widely accepted.

There are only two banks on Saba, and both are located in Windwardside. Both have hours from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Although travelers in Saba are unlikely to do the amount shopping that vacationers in St. Maarten will do, they'll still need money to pay for food, goods, recreation, and accommodations. Fortunately, this small island gives visitors several payment options.
